Quartz Extreme sounds very promising, off loading the desktop graphics to a video card via OpenGL..
Just looking at the supported cards, does that include Rage128's in b/w G3s?

Have you tried Proteus yet Matt?

Great as proteus is, I'm having loads of trouble connecting to Yahoo with it at the moment, same with Fire, but I seem to get through okay with the recently released official Yahoo client. I'm wondering if they've done an AOL and changed their protocols to throw off the developers. But then again I do seem to be able to get through every once in a while which kind of puts that theory to rest. Maybe they're just favouring connections from official clients or something.
I've been reading up on jabber today, I'd love to be able to give that a try but I don't know anyone who uses it yet. Anyone fancy giving it a go? It really is about time that IMing got an open source protocol. It could be so much more than it currently is with a bit of structure and a few APIs behind it. There's been a fair bit of talk about jabber and jabber chatbots becoming a command-line of the internet. A bit fanciful maybe, but there's definitely some interesting potential out there with the current XMLisation of everything going.

And yes, I know you weren't talking to me :P
Links in case anyone doesn't know what I'm on about:
- Jabber.org
- CLI of the Future
- Openp2p Article
- MacOSX Jabber Client (though fire and proteus both support it too)
Just got onto yahoo w/ proteus again, huzzah!
