Nintendo finds the real third dimension

Last week, Penny Arcade let loose a rumour that Nintendo were going to announce something big at E3... something big that wasn't going to be just another (amazing) game title. Soon after, some guys on the GameFAQs Gamecube Message Board sussed out that this was related to display peripherals.

So then everyone started puzzling over 3D display technology, including the lame attempt that Sega made in the arcades, way back when, with Time Traveler. Well, it seems like the guys at MediaFuzion might have cottoned onto something much more concrete. It seems Nintendo have made a bit of a slip-up and dropped subtle hints in their own screenshots. This one, in particular, shows us some "doubling" at work, which could well be used in conjunction with some 3D specs to bring us "ultra-realistic" three-dimensional graphics, the like of which have not been seen since Muppet*Vision 3D!

  • I have to say I missed this rumour completely. Non of the sites I regularly visit (IGN, N-Philes, Nintendojo, Planet-Gamecube) have mentioned it either. I'd be tempted to be extremely skeptical about this until some hard evidence emerges. Those screen shots would be very easy to fake, although it would explain the less than stellar graphics in Mario Sunshine. Guess we'll just have to wait till E3 to find out..

  • My guess... Nintendo turned off this effect in the bulk of the screenshots, but mistakenly (or purposefully?) let it slip through on this one. This is the same shot that can be seen at C&VG, PlanetGamecube etc etc.
I don't know if it would be that easy to fake as the distances seem to be quite well done. It would definitely explain the graphical quality though. Drawing everything twice must surely hit the CPU hard.
Or maybe ATI included this in the hardware?

  • I can feel a headache coming on already! Pretty cool if it's true though. Kind of surprising as well since they got burned with the Virtual Boy.

Did you see that 3d/depth-trickery lcd screen on slashdot a week or two ago? Can't find it now unfortunately .
