Further Adventures In Joiner Land

After my previous mini joiners I thought I'd have a go at something a bit bigger. Switching to lo-res mode on the l'espion gives 80 shots, which although pretty useless for anything else are just about right for doing a big joiner. Anyway see what you think, room joiner, and no comments about the decor :)

  • I guess the two obvious things which need working on are, going from an area of dark to light, and the fall off in the camera.
There's not much can be done about the fall off down one side of the image, as this is just due to the build quality of the camera.
The dark to light contrast problem can be seen strongest near the window. Obviously the cameras auto exposure compensates for the brightness outside and you end up with a really harsh transition between the shots containing just wall and those featuring wall and window. The only way I can think to get round this is to shoot right up to the end of the wall and a seperate set just featuring the window. (ie one or the other, try to keep crossover shots to a minimum)..

  • Gary's joiner that he posted on your other Espion post looks pretty smooth. And yes before you say, I know it's mainly cause it's outside. But I reckon the key is in the photoshop trickery you use to stick it together. Isn't there some package for stitching panoramas together that you can get? I think we used it on some panoramas for Helly Hansen at work.

And by the way, Jonathan Ross has just been raving about his Espion on telly! Haha, how's that for knocking the cool factor down a few notches?

  • I have to say after seeing Gary's joiner, that I prefer the patchwork effect to the blurry photoshoped version. The idea behind joiners is that it mimics the way the human brain sees things rather than the way a lens forces things into singular perspective.
I hate to harken back to it, but Hockneys view that joiners are cubist photography holds a lot of sway with me. To me photoshoping the joins out is kind of missing the point.

  • Apple make a piece of software called Quicktime VR authoring which seemlessly stitches photographs together; i'm not sure whether it can stitch vertically though, or at least the version I used to use didn't anyway.
