According to the government information films of the time if you paint your windows white it saves you from the blinding flash of a Nuclear detonation nearby, and hiding under the kitchen table stops the effects of the 40 megaton blast heading your way..
Oh and keep lots of tinned food in a cupboard nearby, your going to need it ..
