Fobbed off by Jobs?

I mean, what's this supposed to be?! It looks like they haven't finished the front off. And where's my flat-panel iMac?

It seems they've painted themselves into a bit of a corner with their fancy stylings these days, in that whenever they release a new machine I just check to see if it looks any good and barely glance at the specs. Surely there's only so many shapes and configurations that can be practical. Besides, it seems a touch odd to be releasing hardware that mainly appeals to one audience on looks while releasing software that mainly appeals to an entirely different market on internals.

Though, I suppose that's the whole idea.

While I'm on the subject of Apple, OS X v10.1 (how clumsy is that?) is due in September, and by the looks of the preview page they've finally fixed a lot of stuff they should have had down in the first place. For instance; a movable dock, a genie replacement, some finder tweaks and all the DVD you can eat.

  • There's another big Mac show coming up in a couple of months maybe we'll see revised iMacs there..
The new G4's do look a bit lame, a splash of colour or something wouldnt have gone a miss..
Check out the Dual 800mhz G4 though, 83% faster than a 1.7ghz pentium, sslurrpp!?!

    Whats a Genie replacement?

  • You know, the genie swoosh into the dock when you minimise a window.. you can now have a shrinking effect or something instead that's less processor intensive.

    I always hated that genie..

  • Still no sign of Photoshop X either, what are Adobe up to? I'm not putting X back on my Mac until there is a workable image editing solution available. Using Classic mode is just not a reasonable option :(

  • I lokked at this but I read somewhere that it doesn't support JPEG's or something bizzare like that. I'll have to look into it..

  • It probably doesn't support the GIF format since it's not an open standard. Unisys owns the compression algorithm and can therefore charge royalties and generally make money off applications that can create .gifs.

The replacement is the PNG format which is actually loads better (especially in that it supports alpha channels), but isn't fully supported by most browsers yet AFAIK. This w3c page has a load of info about them, there's links to browser support details but the server seems to be down at the mo'. Most interesting is the 3 links at the bottom of the page that let you test if your browser will display PNGs.

And mine does! Wowsers, alpha transparency too.. yum! That will be *so* good for dhtml. Let's just hope the rest of the world catches up soon.
