Quick Get Me A d20 !!!

There's a nice interview with Dungeons and Dragons creator Gary Gygax in the archives at CDmag.com. He talks about how RPG's have evolved from the days of paper and dice, to the current state of the art Never Winter Nights..

And btw if you understand this post's title your secret's safe with me ;)

  • ..in this I thought, other than his claim that the RPG industry is now dominated by D&D and Vampire: the masquerade, weird really considering the rules for vampire were almost unworkable. Did anyone see the American Vampires documentary on tv the other night? Seems vampire costume-play and blood-fetishism is quite the burgeoning sub-culture in the US at the moment, mostly thanks to the books of Poppy Z. Brite and Anne Rice no doubt, though the resurgence of Goth in general will have a lot to do with it.

If you want to have your nostalgic memories crushed heartlessly, check out this account of E. Gary Gygax getting royally fucked-over by just about everybody he had business dealings with.

  • Last time I watched E.T. I had my eyes open for D&D references and noticed in one scene that Elliot's having a slanging match with a school mate and shouts out "Zero Charisma!" at him. What a cool dis! :) The friend's response is something that sounds like "Zinni Sinistar" which I don't get, but I'm presuming is a video-game reference (anyone got any ideas?).
For a while afterwards I was sorely tempted to register 0char as a domain name (zerocharisma is already taken believe it or not). It'd be cool as a RPG geek nostalgia site I reckon, perfectly encapsulating both the lack of social skills and the love of D&D that you need to get the joke.

It's surprising how little of that sort of thing there is on the web actually, seeing as it's virtually founded on role-playing. Seems that most ex-RPGers try and sweep it under the carpet rather than cherishing their warm-fuzzy memories..

Am I weirding anyone out yet? :)
